The Waves Cafe, also known to many students as just "The Caf" is the primary dining place at Pepperdine University. It is run and operated by the French food service corporation, Sodexo. Other than the Oasis and the Coffee House in the HAWC, it is the only place on campus to purchase food on a regular basis.
The Waves Cafe is the dining spot at Pepperdine University where the majority of meals are made. The Cafe first opened in the Fall of 1998 as an attempt to get away from the traditional campus eating at the time in favor of a more "Bistro" style approach. The Waves Cafe is run by Sodexo (formerly Sodexho) and offers a variety of different meals during the day including a special breakfast menu from 7:00am to 10:00am Monday-Friday.
The Grill: is the place where the majority of grilled meat products are served including traditional hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, turkey burgers, chicken burgers and more. Every day they will also feature a new "special". French fries can also be ordered at the grill, and generally are served with most meals unless requested otherwise. The Grill is the most consistent stand in the Waves Cafe, with their menu being the same nearly every day.
The International: is where one can find food from around the world including food from China, Italy, Mexico, Vietnam and more. The International has a day to day menu, and every day something new is served.
Classics: is similar to The International in that it serves food on a day by day basis. It's menu includes all sorts of foods including many different types of meat like roasted pork or ham.
The Salad Bar: is where salads are served.
The Waves Cafe is open from 7:00am to 11:00pm Monday-Friday. On Saturday, they are open from 9:30am to 8:00pm and on Sunday they are open from 9:30am to 11:00pm.
The Waves Cafe is no stranger to controversy. Students often complain that the quality of the food is not very good, and that the service from Sodexo needs improvement. One particularly large outcry amongst students were the hours that the Waves Cafe was open. This has recently been addressed by Sodexo, with the Cafe closing now at 11:00pm on most nights as opposed to the original closing time which was 8:00, the time many students got out of class.
Another major issue was the "B" rating the Waves Cafe was given recently. This was due to faulty equipment. Sodexo immediately fixed the issues and was awarded an "A" rating, but not before several students were able to take pictures of the "B" rating and spread it around the school.
Most of the employees at the Waves Cafe are outside people hired by Sodexo. However, it does appear that Sodexo may now be hiring a limited number of students to work in the Waves Cafe as well.
